Welcome to Florence, the “Magic City” in the hub of northeastern South Carolina commonly called the “Pee Dee Region”. Chartered in 1871 and incorporated in 1890, the original township formed as a railroad terminal. The town was named after Florence Henning Harllee, daughter of General William W. Harllee, the first president of the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad. Originally founded as a railroad town, Florence has emerged into a center for industry, medicine, retail, education and culture. Florence is now the seventh largest city in the state.

Transportation is a major advantage of the area with a major switching yard for CSX Railroad, and direct rail service to two major seaports in Charleston, S.C., and Wilmington, N.C. The city is strategically located at the intersection of two main thoroughfares, I-95 and I-20, and is also near several other main highways. The Florence Regional Airport provides daily commercial connections to major southeastern and international hub airports in Atlanta and Charlotte. The airport has recently expanded its facilities to better serve the interests of the region and is host to the annual Pee Dee Air Show and Festival.

Cutting edge health care services draw many people to the area. With two major hospital systems, McLeod Health and Carolinas Hospital System, Florence continues to keep its residents in the forefront of medical technology and service.

The opportunities for worship abound in the area. Florence offers many different options for residents, running the gamut of religions. Newcomers and long-time residents alike can easily find a place to suit their spiritual needs.

As the Pee Dee’s retail center, Magnolia Mall, The Commons at Magnolia, the Florence Mall and numerous individual retailers attract shoppers from surrounding counties, offering something for every level of consumer.

For Florence’s diners, there is a myriad of opportunities to enjoy – restaurants and clubs offering great atmospheres and live entertainment, serving every palette from fast food to fine dining.

Excellent educational facilities with Florence-Darlington Technical College, Francis Marion University, Coker College, a branch of Limestone College and local primary and secondary schools offer nationally recognized opportunities, both private and public, for everyone. The Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics, which selects students from throughout the state for a residential high school program, also calls this area home.

Florence draws regional audiences to its varied entertainment and cultural opportunities. With an active community theatre local plays showcase community talent throughout the year. Arts abound with the South Carolina Dance Theatre, the Florence Symphony Orchestra and Masterworks Choir. Additionally, area schools and colleges provide numerous cultural opportunities for local audiences. Many visit the 10,000-seat Florence City-County Civic Center for a variety of entertainments including games of the Florence Phantoms, a team of the American Indoor Football League.

Outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the many parks, tennis courts and the Great Pee Dee River. Golfers appreciate the Southern climate, which gives them the chance for year round play on outstanding courses such as the Country Club of South Carolina, a former sight of the NIKE tour. If you are a NASCAR fan, you will not want to miss nearby Darlington Raceway.

While Florence County residents enjoy some of the lowest property taxes in South Carolina, they appreciate the gracious lifestyle and affordable housing options located throughout town. With all the advantages of a growing metropolis but with the charm of Southern hospitality, the Greater Florence area blends rural, suburban, commercial and industrial advantages for the 126,000 lucky people who have chosen our community.
